    The effects of addition of omega-3, 6, 9 fatty acids on the quality of bovine chilled and frozen-thawed sperm

    This study was aimed to investigate the effects of omega-3, 6, 9 fatty acids on the characteristics of bovine chilled and frozen-thawed semen. For this purpose, oil containing different levels of omega-3, 6, 9 fatty acids were added to semen extender. To emulsify the oil in semen extender, polyethylene glycol (PEG) was added as a suitable solvent and the solution was finally sonicated. Five proven Holstein bulls were randomly selected and their ejaculates were collected using an artificial vagina. Groups were designed as control, treatments 1, 2, 3 and 4. The control group contained only the basic extender (Tris-citrate buffer, egg yolk and glycerol) without any additives. In treatment 1, only 5% PEG was added to the diluent; while in treatments 2, 3 and 4 different concentrations of omega-3, 6, 9 fatty acids (1.0, 2.5 and 5.0%) in combination with PEG were added to the basic extender. After dilution, the semen samples were packaged into 0.5 ml straws, a process that was followed by cooling the semen straws. Motility, viability and morphology of semen samples were evaluated after 24 and 48 h of storage in refrigerator (5 ˚C) or after one month of storage in the liquid nitrogen. Immotility was increased and all the other parameters including motility, viability and morphology were significantly decreased in all the groups compared with fresh samples during cold storage and freezing-thawing. Our results demonstrated the following: 1) PEG has significant detrimental effects, especially on the sperm motility; 2) addition of omega-3, 6, 9 fatty acids could not improve the sperm motility in chilled storage condition and after freezing-thawing; and 3) omega-3, 6, 9 fatty acidscould not also attenuate the other deleterious effects of PEG. In conclusion, our findings reveal that addition of these fatty acids to the semen extender does not enhance the resistance of the bovine sperm membrane to cooling and freezing-thawing and that further studies are required to find suitable candidate compounds that can boost the quality of semen that is chilled and freeze-thawed

    The effect of inhalation aromatherapy of geranium on pain and physiological indices after appendectomy: A double-blind randomized clinical trial

    Introduction: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of inhalation aromatherapy with sweet-scented geranium essential oil on pain and physiological indices after appendectomy. Methods: This double-blind clinical trial was performed on 120 patients undergoing appendectomy. Aromatherapy was performed with 1 sweet-scented geranium and sweet almond oil in the experimental placebo groups, respectively. Physiological symptoms were recorded before induction of anesthesia, before surgery, 30 min and 4 h after surgery. The control group received no intervention and only pain intensity and physiological indices were recorded in the mentioned stages. The placebo group underwent sweet almond essential oil aromatherapy. Data collection tools included demographic information form, physiological index checklist, and visual pain scale. Results: Results of 7 measurements showed significant differences between the experimental and placebo groups as well as the experimental and control groups in terms of mean heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, blood oxygen percentage, and pain (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Results of the present study showed that the effect of inhalation aromatherapy with sweet-scented geranium essential oil after appendectomy reduces pain and physiological indices. Therefore, the above aromatherapy can be used as a complementary treatment along with other treatments. © 2020 The Author

    Prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus in Eastern Mediterranean region: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    Purpose: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is one of the costly challenges in the health field. Despite the individual studies in the Eastern Mediterranean, there is no comprehensive study in this regard. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of GDM in the Eastern Mediterranean region. Methods: In this meta-analysis and systematic review, three international databases (PubMed, Web of science and Scopus) were searched from inception until 30 December 2018. The Hui tool was used to assess the quality of the included studies. Results: Thirty-three studies performed on 887166 participants were included in the meta-analysis. Based on the results of random effect method, the overall prevalence of GDM was 11.7%. Between six country with have three or more study, pooled prevalence for Saudi Arabi it was 3.6 times more than Israel (17.6 vs. 4.9%), and for Pakistan, Qatar, Bahrain and Iran were 15.3%, 14.7%, 12.2%, and 8.6%, respectively. Conclusion: Despite the high diversity of methods, the results of the present study indicate a high prevalence of GDM in the Eastern Mediterranean region, indicating more policymakers’ interest in timely screening and proper management
